Description
Habitats: Marine; demersal. Tropical
Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: south to
Natal, South Africa; India
Morphology: A pale yellowish-brown to brown goby with
narrow blakcish edges on scales, dark fins, and a yellow-edged ocellus on the
upper part of the caudal fin. upper caudal fin base with a
large black spot surrounded by yellow. Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft
rays (total): 9 - 11; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9 – 10. Parachaeturichthys spp. Inhabit deep water
(Rarely enters estuaries. Captured by trawls over mud bottom. Found to contain
tetrodotoxin (TTX) and anhydrotetrodotoxin (anh-TTX) which causes paralytic
food poisoning
