About the Department

PG and Research Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology is one of the pioneering Research Departments of V.O. Chidambaram college and was established in 1957. The U.G. and P.G programmes got affiliated during 1957 and 1969  respectively. In 1984, the Department has elevated to research Department with affiliation granted for Ph.D. programs.  The Department is supported by DST – FIST programme and is funded by FIST in 2003  and 2011. The DST funded laboratory was equipped with sophisticated instruments such as PCR, GEL DOC, ELISA ANALYSER, GLS, AAS etc., A remarkable number of research projects have been conducted by our faculty with financial assistance from agencies such as UGC, TNSCST, DST and ICAR. The Department has signed MoUs with the Fisheries and Research Institute and Sajan Pharma Institute for collaborative research during the year 2020. Collaboration with these institutes promote research and training by providing internship, field visit and project work. The department arranges frequent field trips that gives on-field experience to the students in the field of Sericulture, Apiculture and hands on training in Molecular biology during the academic year. 

The department also conducts various day celebrations like Ocean day, Darwin’s day, Frog conservation day and awareness programmes in order to bring out the hidden talents of the students and help them explore new frontiers. As a part of the curriculum, department provide gender sensitization programme, capacity building programme and skill based courses every year in order to promote the knowledge of students. The zoology department has been conducting various national, international conferences and faculty development programmes. To enhance the research aptitude and learning process, students are encouraged to present papers in the conferences and to publish books.

Our teaching staff are experts in various aspects of biological sciences like Environmental Biology, Animal Taxonomy, Aquaculture, Microbiology, Toxicology, Molecular biology, Marine Science, Medical Physiology, Wildlife Science, Entomology etc. Faculty members published research papers and books in the peer reviewed journals with high impact factors. The fulfilment of the department is its dedicated team of staff members who strive to reach excellence and meet the motto of the college “Education for All”.
