MO145 Pinna young one
Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Bivalvia
Order: Pinnida
Family: Pinnidae
Genus: Pinna
Description:
Like adult pen shells, young Pinna have a
bivalve structure, meaning they have two hinged shells that can open and close.
Pinna shells are typically long and tapered, resembling a feather or a quill,
and can be quite large even in their juvenile stages.
They are filter feeders, using their
extended siphons to draw in water and filter out plankton and other small
particles for food. Young Pinna are found in marine environments, often in
sandy or muddy seabeds in shallow coastal waters.
