Mo136 Pleurophyllidia (Pikachu nudibranch)

Phylum: Mollusca

Class: Gastropoda

Order: Nudibranchia

Family: Chromodorididae

Genus: Pleurophyllidia

 Description:

Pleurophyllidia species are renowned for their vibrant and striking coloration. They often have bright patterns, spots, or lines on their bodies, making them visually appealing. Some species of Pleurophyllidia exhibit mimicry, resembling toxic or unpalatable organisms like flatworms or other nudibranchs to deter potential predators.

Like all nudibranchs, Pleurophyllidia lack an external shell, and their soft, often elaborately textured bodies serve as protection. Pleurophyllidia are found in marine environments, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions, often in coral reefs and rocky coastal areas. These sea slugs are carnivorous and feed on a variety of prey, including sponges, tunicates, and other small invertebrates.

IUCN Status: Not Evaluated.
